Market Street forms the vertebrae of San Francisco. First surveyed in 1847 by Jasper O’Farrell, the boulevard was laid out to provide a transition between two opposing grids. Intended to become the city’s main and widest thoroughfare, it rapidly became the busiest. In the mid 19th century, San Francisco was regarded as the most developed western American outpost of urbanity, sophistication and refinement. By the conclusion of the century, its reputation rivaled many East Coast cities. Market Street became the base for cable car and horse car lines providing service along the local commercial corridor and connections to distant transfer destinations. The 1906 catastrophic San Francisco Earthquake and Fire briefly halted development. During the reconstruction, the Market Street cable car lines would be entirely removed and replaced by electric streetcars. Automobiles would replace streetcars. During the 1970s, the introduction of the subterranean Bay Area Rapid Transit system (BART) alleviated some of the traffic congestion. This edition is an architectural survey of Market Street’s historical and contemporary buildings accompanied by historical profiles. The narrative begins from the Embarcadero until the Tenderloin district.Architectural Properties Photographed:“Cupid’s Span”, The Embarcadero and Folsom StreetsThe Embarcadero, Piers 1, 1½, 3 and 5Hyatt Regency Hotel, 5 Embarcadero CenterRobert Frost Memorial Plaque, California and DrummLandmark Building, 1 MarketFederal Reserve Bank Building, 101 MarketOne California Building, 1 CaliforniaMattson Building, 245 Market101 California BuildingPacific Gas and Electric Building, 77 Beale333 Market Building388 Market BuildingLiberty Bell Slot Machine Marker, 406 Market425 Market BuildingOne Front BuildingMechanics Monument, Market at Battery and BushCentral Plaza, 455 MarketOne Bush BuildingBattery Bridge Public Art, Between Market and BushFirst Market Tower, 525 Market525 Market FountainAmerican Trust Bank Building, 532 MarketFlat Iron Building, 544 Market550 Market Building554 Market BuildingPatrick & Company, 560 MarketChancery Building, 562-566 Market570-572 Market BuildingMarket Center Building, 555-575 MarketThe Finance Building, 576-580 Market581-585 Market BuildingHobart Building, 582 Market595 Market BuildingWest Coast Life Building, 601-605 Market Building607-611 Market BuildingMetropolis Trust Building, 625 Market44 Montgomery BuildingCalifornia Admission Day Memorial, Market and MontgomeryOne Montgomery Tower, 120 KearnyOne Post Building652-660 Market BuildingDe Young Building, 690 MarketLotte Crabtree Fountain, Market and Geary and KearnyPalace Hotel, 2 New MontgomeryMonadnock Building, 685 MarketOne Kearny BuildingHearst Building, 5 ThirdMutual Savings Bank Building, 700-716 MarketCentral Tower, 701-705 Market711-713 Market Building717 Market Building720 Market Building721 Market Building722-742 Market BuildingBancroft Building, 731 MarketUnion Trust Building, 744 MarketFour Seasons Hotel and Residences, 757-765 MarketSavings Union Branch of Security Pacific National Bank, 1 GrantPhelan Building, 760-784 MarketHumboldt Saving Bank Building, 785 Market799 Market Building2 Stockton BuildingHotel Zelos, 12 FourthJames Bong Building, 825-833 MarketCalifornia Savings Bank Building, 830 MarketParrot Building/The Emporium, 835 Market838-842 Market Street856 Market BuildingJames Flood Building, 870 MarketHallidie Plaza, Public Square at Powell Station901 Market BuildingOne Hallidie Plaza944 Market BuildingBank of America Building, One Powell Read more
